Two of the Most Common Myths Regarding Gum Disease
Myth #1: Gum Disease Isn't Very Common
Gum Disease affects nearly half of all adults over the age of 30. It is caused by plaque, which is on everyone's teeth. Normally, plaque is removed through regular brushing and flossing; however, when plaque builds up, it infects the gums, causing gingivitis and eventually gum disease.
Myth #2: Gum Disease and Cavities Go Hand-in-Hand
While it is true that both gum disease and cavities are caused by poor oral hygiene, one can have gum disease and not have a single cavity. Gum disease also is nearly painless, and many people have it without realizing it. Bleeding, red, swollen and tender gums are better indicators of gum disease than cavities. These are symptoms of gingivitis, an early form of gum disease that can be treated by a professional cleaning and regular brushing.
